Public information session on radon coming November 2

25 October 2024 à 3:19 pm

A local citizen activist is helping organize a public information session on radon next Saturday in Campbell’s Bay with a group of experts, to mark the beginning of Radon Action month. The free event will take place on Saturday November 2, at the Campbell’s Bay RA Hall (2 rue Second) from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Organizer Judy Spence explained that radon is a colourless, odourless radioactive gas that’s one of the country’s leading causes of lung cancer. If forms naturally due to the breakdown of radioactive materials such as uranium, and without proper mitigation it can build to dangerous levels in confined spaces such as homes or workplaces. Spence pointed out that the Pontiac region has particularly high levels of radon (see map below).

She said that they would have several speakers with various areas of expertise, including one from Health Canada’s Radon Action Group as well as experts in mitigation and detection.

The full interview with Spence (8m40) is available here.
