BEI submits report on fatal 2023 police intervention in Clarendon
Quebec’s police watchdog the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) announced this week that they had submitted their report on a fatal police intervention in Clarendon on June 5, 2023 that left 39-year-old Christopher Watson dead.
According to their statement on April 10, BEI investigators submitted their report on the case to the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) on April 3. The DPCP will determine whether to bring charges against the officers involved.
“The report submitted to the DPCP by the BEI contains all the components of the investigation. It includes the statements of witnesses and those involved, as well as the material evidence collected and the related expert opinions,” the statement reads (translated). “These elements are sensitive given their nature and raise questions of protection of personal information. This report is privileged. Consequently, no additional information extracted from the investigation will be disclosed by the BEI.”
The BEI investigates all cases in which a person (other than an on-duty police officer) dies or suffers a serious injury during a police intervention or while in police custody.
