The green flashing light now allowed everywhere in Quebec for firefighters

Since April 1, across the Pontiac and across Quebec, firefighters can use the flashing green light on a vehicle other than an emergency vehicle to get to the scene of a fire.

The green flashing light is used to inform the person in front of you that there is an intervention in progress and that the firefighters must attend. The Highway Safety Code officially allows firefighters to use the flashing green light to identify their personal vehicle when going to fire stations or to an intervention site.

Remember that a pilot project was launched in 2015 in certain municipalities in the Outaouais to study the use of the flashing green light, including in the municipality of Pontiac.

The public is asked to show courtesy to the firefighters to help them get to a place where an emergency is taking place more quickly. “Every second, every minute you can save to get to the job, it’s an extra second and a minute to fight the fire, to intervene.”

“This new measure will make it possible to promote a faster response time from the fire safety services, while ensuring the safety of road users,” said Minister of Transport, François Bonnardel.

Note that in Ontario, the flashing green light has been used for several years by volunteer firefighters. Municipalities in the MRC Pontiac, such as Mansfield, have now implemented this system for their firefighters.
