The former mayor of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes sector (before the merger), Jérôme Sallafranque, died last Sunday (February 7) following cancer. In addition to having been a municipal councilor and mayor, he has been involved in various organizations. He was a member of the board of directors, including a few years as president, of the Caisse populaire Desjardins de Chapeau and he served as president of the board of directors of CHIP 101.9. He was also involved in the SADC Pontiac, the Chapeau Farmers Association, the Club Lion de Chapeau, the Knights of Columbus and in the Saint-Alphonsus-de-Liguori Church, on the Isle-aux-Allumettes.

He also received, from Pope Francis, recognition for his involvement within the parish of Saint-Alphonse-de-Liguori de Chapeau.

Born in Chapeau in 1934, Mr. Sallafranque grew up in a farming family. Being the ninth of sixteen children, it is said that he quickly followed his father into the fields and that from the age of six he helped with the farm work. Finishing his studies at the age of 14, he began his professional life as a farmer helper. A profession he has always exercised alongside other jobs and which he has always done with passion in his spare time helping his younger brother who inherited his father’s land.

“He is a very responsible being at all levels. He does his job, concerned with transparency and fairness. He enjoys great credibility with everyone. His personal involvement with his caisse, for more than 21 years, has greatly contributed to the development of the Desjardins cooperative ”described the Conseil québécois de la coopération et de la mutualité, giving it an honor in 2012.

Married to Françoise Lair, he was the father of 4 children and the grandfather of several grandchildren. In addition, he has ensured a succession by instilling in his children the same values of dedication and involvement in the community. His daughter Mariette sits on the municipal council of L’Isle-aux-Allumettes.

A private family gathering will be held at Hayes Funeral Home, Chapeau, Quebec, this Friday February 12. A burial funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Alphonsus Church in the privacy of the immediate family only. The ceremony will be webcast live on the Father Tim Moyles Facebook page at 11 am.
