The Coalition S’allier pour le tramway is a citizen group advocating for the creation of a tramway route between Aylmer and the downtowns of Ottawa and Gatineau, in order to cut down on congestion during peak hours. According to group representative Véronique Martin, residents of the Pontiac would benefit from the service, given the number of people that commute to either city on a daily basis.

« The western sector of the city of Gatineau has a strong demographic growth which leads to many opportunities for residential and economic development. This growth goes hand in hand with a growing need for travel and public transport services, which must be met » – Véroniqiue Martin (translated)

Despite the number of people working from home due to the pandemic, Martin doesn’t think that this changes the need for a tram, or streetcar line in Gatineau.

« The pandemic will end and we must see more in the future», she said (translated).

The Coalition has indicated that they will be active in the coming weeks, during the municipal and possible federal elections, in order to make candidates aware of the project. They invite citizens, organization and businesses to sign their declaration to demonstrate the public’s support for the initiative, which is available here (French only). More information on the project is available here.
