Teacher strike for the Syndicat du personnel de l’enseignement des Hautes-Rivières

14 April 2021 à 12:00 am

Earlier today, teachers in the region exercised their right to strike, until 9:30 am. In a press release published this morning, the Syndicat du personnel de l’enseignement des Hautes-Rivières (FSE-CSQ) repeated that the objective, according to them, is to advance the discussions which have still not yielded satisfactory results at the bargaining tables.

“The teachers, exasperated, exhausted and at the end of their resources, want to express they’re fed-up, but they want to limit the consequences on the students, while putting pressure on the school administrations. We now want the government to hear the cry from the hearts of teachers, they need a clear demonstration that the government supports them and recognizes them in their task, because they can no longer run the school at arm’s length. The government must take action, ” thinks SPEHR president Daniel Boisjoli.

This strike targeted all education sectors: preschool and elementary schools, secondary schools, vocational training and general adult education in the Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais (CSSHBO), Western Quebec (WQSB) and des Hautes-Laurentides (CSSHL).

The SPEHR reiterated that teachers in Quebec have been without an employment contract for over a year, and that the government wanted to continue negotiations despite the context of the pandemic. The SPEHR says it is calling for significant improvements for teaching staff in their daily lives, in particular through a better composition of classes and additional services, a reduction in workload, better salaries and less precariousness.
