Pontiac MP Sophie Chatel has been appointed to the the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance.

“Honoured to have been appointed on the Standing Committee on Finance after a prolific career in the field of taxation, including with the OECD. I am surrounded by brilliant members with different backgrounds who all have a desire to advance economic and fiscal issues for the benefit of the Canadian economy and all Canadians, especially the most vulnerable.
We concluded a busy first week in committee to study Bill C-2: An Act to provide further support in response to COVID-19. It is imperative and urgent that we move forward with government support to help those who need it most, I think of small businesses and specific sectors, including the arts sector,” she wrote in a post on social media.

The mandate of the committee is to study and report on financial matters, as well as oversee the management and operations of government agencies, including the Department of Finance and the CRA. Their duties also include pre-budget consultations, reviewing Monetary Policy Reports from the Governor of the Bank of Canada and reviewing the Finance Minister’s economic and fiscal updates.

Chatel is no stranger to the finance world, having served as the head of the OECD’s Tax Treaty Unit as well as various roles related to taxation at the CRA, UN and IMF.

The work, mandate and membership of the Standing Committee on Finance is available here.
