Shawville mayoral candidate Patti Moffatt pitches herself as the “more positive choice”

Outgoing Shawville councillor Patti Moffatt said that her candidacy for mayor’s seat was a last minute decision, prompted by the sudden withdrawal of Mayor Sandra Murray due to health issues.

Moffatt has served the past two terms on council, as well as deputy mayor for the past four years. She will face off against fellow outgoing councillor Bill McCleary in this election. She said that the reason she decided to run was because she felt someone had to run against her opponent.

A resident of the town for the past 14 years, Moffatt said that what she liked the most about Shawville was how tight-knit and welcoming it was. She recalled residents banding together when Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School was being threatened with closure as a good example of that spirit.

Like her opponent McCleary and outgoing Mayor Murray, Moffatt highlighted all the work that council had done on the town’s water system over the past term. As a member of the Parent’s Voice, a local organization for young families, Moffatt also helped secure funding for play structures at Mill Dam Park.

Looking forward, she said that keeping up municipal infrastructure would always be a priority, but she hoped that they could be more forward-thinking when it came to maintenance and not just reacting to things that needed attention immediately.
