Senator Boivenu tables a bill to better monitor men who have committed acts of domestic violence

Conservative Senator Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu tabled a bill in the Senate in the last few days, that aims to better monitor and supervise men who have committed acts of domestic violence.

In an interview with CHIP 101.9, Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu explained that he took advice from women’s groups working with victims of domestic violence.

“We wrote this bill with them, because they are the ones who have the knowledge. Too often domestic violence leads to the murder of a woman and also to suicide. We therefore want to save several lives. The loophole that these women have identified is the inability of the justice system to protect them once the abusive ex-spouse has been exposed, “argued Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu.

Therapy and electronic bracelet to replace prison?

Senator Boisvenu mentioned that they also looked at what is being done elsewhere. He stressed that the project would allow the wearing of an electronic bracelet, which is already used in some European countries.

“What the women told us was that jail was not the answer. What women are telling us is that the danger is between the time they report the individual to the police and the time when the justice system deals with that case. Often the husband is released from prison even more violent and frustrated. “

Senator Boisvenu mentions that the bill would allow a judge to impose the wearing of an electronic bracelet on an accused and to oblige him to undergo therapy. “It is an effective technological means that could give women the chance to find safety when a security perimeter is not respected, it could save their lives,” believes Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu.
