Pontiac Provincial Hockey tournament returns to Shawville

15 January 2024 à 3:14 pm

This past weekend (January 12-14), the Shawville arena once again was host to the Pontiac Provincial U15/U18 Hockey Tournament, bringing in minor hockey teams from both Ontario and Quebec to battle it out for trophies and bragging rights. There were 16 teams competing in this weekend’s action, while 15 turned out to the annual U11/U13 tournament the weekend before. The tournaments have been ongoing for several years, though with an interruption for the pandemic.

Ed Rusenstrom, the head coach of the U18A Pontiac Lions said that the boys played well over the course of the tournament. They were the only home team to make it to the Sunday finals against the Beasts of Barrhaven, who they previously lost to on the opening night of the tournament. The Lions played a strong game despite the Beasts going up one goal in the second period, but an empty-netter in the dying minutes of the third sealed the game 2-0 for the visitors.

Rusenstrom added that playing in front of the home crowd was a big deal for the team, noting that it’s not often that the stands in the Shawville arena are filled.

The tournament winners were as follows:

U15A: Dave’s Dusters Nepean

U15B: Vikings Casselman

U18A: Beasts of Barrhaven

U18B: Cougars St-Constant

More photos from the event can be found on the tournament’s social media.
