Oktoberfest Ladysmith kicks off this Friday
The streets of Ladysmith will soon be buzzing with people and draped in German flags for the annual Oktoberfest celebrations starting this Friday (September 29). The area is home to a large population of German settlers, and an organization was formed to host local Oktoberfest celebrations in 1985, a tradition that has continued to the present day.
CHIP 101.9 spoke with Ladysmith Oktoberfest board member Katrina Soroka about the plans for this year’s event. She said that in addition to all the typical attractions like beer, sauerkraut and live music, there will be performances by the Great Canadian Lumberjacks, a horseshoe tournament and a parade on Saturday.
Admission is $20/day or $35 for the weekend. Children under 12 are admitted without charge.
Soroka explained that the event is put on by a core group of about a dozen volunteers as well as help from numerous members of the community. She said that the group has donated profits to a wide variety of community organizations over the years.
More information can be found on the organization’s website.
