Jardin Éducatif gears up for another growing season

4 May 2023 à 3:09 pm

With the soil thawing and green shoots sprouting up around the region, CHIP 101.9 spoke with Martin Riopel, the director general of the Jardin Éducatif to discuss the organization’s plans for the coming season. He said that one of the biggest changes coming this year would be the way they sell their produce. They will be adding a large greenhouse to their property along Hwy. 148 in Vinton to help extend their growing season. Also, instead of having a kiosk open during the week, they will be taking orders through social media and having customers pick up there selections on a set day.

The garden’s primary purpose is to host a summer camp for at-risk youth in the region, who are typically referred to the program by their school or through social services, where they learn about horticulture while also participating in fun activities. Riopel said that they also donate some of their bounty to local food bank Bouffe Pontiac, which last year totaled 3,599 lbs.

He added that they would also be hosting a Friday morning class this summer where residents can come work in the garden and learn techniques (those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult).

Coming up on Saturday, May 20th, the Jardin will be holding their annual plant sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3 rue Mccuaig in Campbell’s Bay. They are also looking for summer workers for the season. More information can be found on their social media, by calling 819-648-5402 or by emailing direction@jepontiac.org.
