Fundraiser being held for Swisha woman who lost her legs following infection

The family of a woman from Rapides-des-Joachims who recently had her legs amputated following complications from a bacterial infection is raising funds from the community to help ease her recovery.

Crystal Fischer, a 35-year-old mother of three was suddenly hospitalized back on December 17 with pulmonary blood clots that required surgery. Fischer’s sister-in-law, Kelsey Daly Mainville, explained that she was taken from Deep River Hospital to the Ottawa Civic Hospital. She contracted Group A Streptococcus, a bacterial infection and became septic, requiring dialysis and was also placed in a medically induced coma for several weeks. On February 29, Fischer underwent surgery to amputate both her legs above the knee, as a result of streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis, a rare condition caused by the bacterial infection.

Daly Mainville  said that despite the tribulations of the last few months and the long road ahead, her sister-in-law is in good spirits.

Daly Mainville said that they were raising funds to help with expenses the family has incurred already, as well as Fischer’s recovery and the renovations that will be required for her home, through both GofundMe and with a raffle. She said they are also planning a poker run for mid-April.
