EntourElle asks for financial assistance to address violence against women

EntourElle, the women’s shelter in the Pontiac, went to the offices of the MP and the MNA for the Pontiac, William Amos and André Fortin respectively, as well as the Campbells Bay courthouse to join the movement to pressure the government to include more money in the budget for the financial needs to address violence against women.

This movement, brought foward by the Fédération des maisons d’hébergement pour femmes (FMHF), aims to pressure the government to allocate more money towards educating the population of the feminicides that occur all over the country. The community worker Vanessa Chabot and the clinician manager Ashley Nadeau from EntourElle told CHIP about this movement.

The organizations that help women who have suffered from domestic violence also insist on the need to provide a safety net for abused women. According to them, this involves the continuous training of socio-legal workers and police forces, but also through prevention and awareness in schools.

About the FMHF

Each year, the FMHF represents 36 shelters in Quebec which house nearly 3,000 women and their 1,500 children, victims of domestic and family violence, trafficking and honor-based violence, sexual assault and exploitation, etc. They answer more than 50,000 calls and provide more than 175,000 individual follow-ups. They support, through their external services, more than 5,000 women and children. Their occupancy rate is close to or even exceeds 100%. They have to refuse nearly 10,000 accommodation requests each year due to lack of space available at the time of the call.
