At the final MRC council meeting of 2023, the mayors approved the 2024 budget for the non-organized territory (TNO) of Lac-Nilgaut. At more than 8,500 square km, it accounts for more than 70% of the MRC’s overall land. The council of mayors acts as administrators for this territory, with separate meetings being held before their regular monthly meeting.

As MRC Territory Director Jason Durand has explained in previous interviews with CHIP 101.9, the majority of the budget for the TNO is spent on maintaining the enormous road network that connects it to the rest of the region, and this year was no different, coming in at 56%.

This year, the budget of the TNO has increased significantly from $751,997 in 2023 to $888,770 for 2024. MRC  accountant Annie Vaillancourt explained in the meeting that the increase was driven mainly by an increase of just over $50,000 in the road maintenance budget, as well as capital expenditures of $86,500 to finance a new truck and off-road rescue side by side. For this increase, $122,682 was appropriated from the surplus.
