CHIP 101.9 spoke with Shawville Mayor Bill McCleary about the municipality’s recently passed budget for 2024.

Revenue

In discussing the budget, McCleary mentioned that the municipality of Shawville is facing a situation they’re calling the COVID effect. In 2020-21, many homes in Shawville sold for above market value and this year the MRC Pontiac reassessed the property values in five local municipalities, Shawville being one of them.

The overall valuation of property in Shawville increased to $204,114,000 from $131,987,000 in 2023 ($72,127,000 increase). To offset this new property evaluation, McCleary says they decrease the mill rate from 0.83 in 2023 to 0.63 this year.

McCleary said one item of note in this year’s revenues, aside from the mill rate, is the $324,592 in government grants, which the municipality will use to improve the municipal streets ($50,000), as well as Mill Dam Park ($60,000), among other projects.

Expenses

This year the municipality of Shawville has $3,704,626 in expenses. The largest sum of which is “Other Financial Activities” totalling $1,008,661. According to McCleary, this amount is directly related to the grant money the municipality will be receiving in 2024.
