Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) is investigating after a woman suffered a serious injury while in police custody in Campbell’s Bay on Friday (March 1).

The BEI issued a statement on March 2 regarding the incident, laying out the initial information made available to them (translated):

“• On March 1, 2024 around 8:40 a.m., Sûreté du Québec police officers allegedly arrested a person at their home;

• Around 11:15 a.m., the person was found unconscious on the floor of the interrogation room;

• First aid was provided to her and she was then transported to a hospital where her condition was considered serious.”

The BEI confirmed to CHIP 101.9 that the interrogation room is monitored by cameras, and the BEI is in possession of the footage.

The statement adds that five BEI investigators have been assigned to the case and investigators from the Montreal Police will be assigned to conduct a parallel criminal investigation. The BEI investigates any time someone is dies or is seriously injured by police officers, or suffers injuries while in police custody.
