16 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the long weekends

12 July 2021 à 12:00 am

During the long weekends of the national holidays, the police officers of the Sûreté du Québec stepped up their interventions on the road network from June 23 to July 4. Although the police have made all the necessary efforts by intensifying surveillance and increasing the number of interventions, the Sûreté still deplores nine fatal collisions on the territory.

The patrollers, many on the road network to ensure the safety of road users, intervened with several offending drivers. They have specifically targeted impaired driving ability, whether through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two. These interventions, intensified during the long weekends of national holidays, allowed the police to make 188 arrests for impaired driving.

For the Outaouais-Laurentides region, the Sûreté reports the following statistics:

• 2 fatal collisions

• 16 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Reports served:

• 1194 reports for driving at a higher speed

• 39 findings for not wearing a seat belt

• 25 reports for cell phone while driving

• 500 reports for various offenses

• Total of 1758

As the construction holidays approach, the Sûreté du Québec reiterates its message of prevention to road users. They are invited to plan their trips well, to avoid distractions, to wear their seat belts and to respect the speed limits. Combined with police interventions on the road, the Sûreté du Québec’s awareness campaigns aim to improve road safety records by also focusing on prevention. Throughout the year, the Sûreté du Québec deploys its actions in collaboration with many partners who are all committed to saving lives.
