Land-based salmon farming project looking to make a splash in Pontiac

27 June 2024 à 3:03 pm

Samonix, a start-up based out of Chelsea, is looking to create a land-based Atlantic Salmon farming operation in the Pontiac region. At the most recent MRC Pontiac meeting, the project received a letter of support from council, specifically for their application to Hydro-Quebec and the provincial government for a 12 MW electrical hookup.

Rémi Bertrand, Director of Development for the company, explained that he had helped facilitate their purchase of land in the Litchfield Industrial Site, and they offered to bring him aboard.

He explained that due to the government’s recent move to ban open-net salmon farming in British Columbia, they saw an opening for land-based operations.

Bertrand explained that all projects that require more than 5 MW of electricity have to be vetted by Hydro-Quebec and the Ministry of Economy, and they submitted their application back in March. He added that they also have to get approval from the Ministry of Environment, and said they would be aiming to submit their paperwork in August of this year.

The full interview with Bertrand (15m40) is available here.
