PQ chief Paul St-Pierre-Plamondon talks climate change in interview with CHIP 101.9

8 May 2023 à 11:42 am

Passing through the Outaouais, the leader of the Parti Québécois, Paul St-Pierre-Plamondon, spoke with CHIP 101.9 about infrastructure needs within municipalities. He believes that the Government of Quebec will have to support municipalities due to the impact of climate change.

“The UMQ has hired a firm specializing in estimating the costs resulting from these climatic events. Who come to us with a serious study, and let’s remember, in Quebec, not all the projects are supported by a serious study, they come with their homework ready, well done and it is indicated that two billion per year are required in support of these municipalities,” he said (translated). “Vis-à-vis what we are experiencing like floods, rivers that come out of their beds, but it is also true for the ice, it is also true for tornadoes. So what scientists are telling us is that events like these will happen again, and with greater intensity over the next few decades. So we can’t close our eyes and then close our ears and we can’t leave the mayors alone with few resources when it comes to challenges like these. Because unfortunately, indeed, if they don’t have the resources to prepare themselves adequately, well, it’s people’s lives that we put in danger, and that’s very serious.”
