The Groupe l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet is back this year with another “treasure hunt” on Saturday June 4. The group has a mission of promoting the culture and history of the island, and the treasure hunt is a popular fundraiser. Registration is required by May 29. Organizer Guylaine La Salle explained what attendees could expect.

“This year, we changed the formula a bit following the positive feedback from last year,” she said (translated). “That means that we have six destinations for participants to discover. People go for walks everywhere on Île-du-Grand-Calumet. It’s a bit like the treasure hunt and then the Amazing Race formula. It’s in single file, they are on a path, an itinerary to follow. The places that people don’t know, a lot of the history of the island. The mission of the Groupe l’Île-du-Grand-Calumet is to develop and redevelop the tourist, heritage and cultural sites of the municipality.”

The cost is $50 per vehicle, and registration and e-transfered payments can be made to groupeliledugrandcalumet@gmail.com. The grand prize is $500 cash.

“At the moment, we have two projects underway, namely the St-Anne Montée du Monseigneur-Martel cemetery,” La Salle said (translated). “The cemetery dates from the early 1800s. For four years now, we have had volunteers who have done a lot of research to develop a list of people, our ancestors who were buried in the cemetery. To date, we have found almost 2,000 names.”

More information is also available via the group’s Facebook page.
