Québec announces 5,000 public service positions spreading out across the province; will government jobs now be coming to the Pontiac?

Following premiere François Legault’s news conference Thursday, February 24, 2022, in Maniwaki, Robert Bussière, the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) MNA for Gatineau, spoke to the Pontiac Community Radio Station (CHIP 101.9) about the Government announcing 5,000 public service jobs that is expected to be spread out across the province.

In the first phase of this rollout, the Pontiac will not be getting any goverment jobs here. Bussière says other regions set to receive government positions will be announced later, in another phase of the project.

“Listen, first of all, its was made very clear in yesterday’s announcement […] these are the first regions, but there will be others coming in the future. I’ve worked really hard to to make our government aware of the fact that a part of my riding, the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau, has great needs that aren’t met,” Bussière says. “I’m convinced that there will be more government jobs coming in the future. And, our government, of course, has the intention to move government jobs out of Québec city into different regions across the province. Listen, I’m convinced if we’re still here, it will continue to get done.”

High speed internet, which is currently being deployed in the Pontiac, could have a positive impact on jobs being transferred to rural regions.

“It’s far from over. We’re just getting started. We’re invested in getting it done, we’re keeping our promise. We have the first jobs that are being transferred in September 2022 and we have committed to transfer positions over a ten year period, between 2018-28,” Bussière says. “We intend to keep our promise. And, as you know, our world is changing rapidly, which is encouraging for rural regions. Contrary to when the world changed and people started moving to urban centers to work. With high-speed internet, the pandemic having some positive affect, government and businesses now know that with a few adjustments, their employees can work very effectively from home.”
