The SQ wants to educate the population about the vulnerabilities on the road

Police officers from the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in the Outaouais-Laurentides region say they want to raise public awareness of the vulnerability of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists on the roads.

“It is important to specify that all users are responsible for their own safety and that of others and that each user of the road network has a responsibility which is shared. Motorists and vulnerable users must therefore adopt responsible behavior, thereby making Quebec’s roads safer, ”explains Sergeant Marc Tessier.

The goal, according to the Sûreté du Québec, is to get users to adopt responsible behavior.

For motorists:
• Observe the speed limits
• Stop the vehicle before the stop line
• Give way to pedestrians
• Check the blind spot carefully before carrying out a maneuver
• Switch on your headlights to be visible at all times

For pedestrians:
• Always walk on sidewalks;
• If there is no sidewalk, walk on the shoulder or the edge of the road, against the direction of traffic
• Use the places provided to cross a road
• Make eye contact with motorists before crossing

For cyclists:
• Respect the signage and the priority of passage;
• Be predictable, signal your intentions;
• Cycling safety begins with compliance with the Highway Safety Code and the adoption of preventive behavior;
• To wear a helmet;
• Cyclists must give right of way to any vehicle traveling on the lane in which they want to enter.

The Sûreté du Québec points out that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users.

“These tips are easy to implement and these small, simple actions can save lives,” insists Marc Tessier.
