Pontiac hunter Robert Dorion is in favour of some new guidelines being promoted by local MRCs in regards to deer hunting. Last week, representatives from three MRCs (Pontiac, Vallée-de-la-Gatineau and Antoine-Labelle in the Laurentides) held a press conference promoting an initiative by Uni pour la Faune (United for Wildlife), which asks that hunters target bucks with three or more points on each side of their rack.

Dorion said that he’s seen a large decline in deer populations in the Pontiac area, and the suggestion from Uni pour la Faune is a step in the right direction to ensure a healthy deer population in the local area. He noted that deer that are more mature are more interesting to hunt.

He added that the Quebec government could make additional changes to ensure that local wildlife populations remain healthy. He suggested that they make their administrative zones smaller and better target their interventions and rules to specific geographic areas.
